Conversion into a multifunctional event venue

Since 2018, the Stiftung Stadtkultur has been working with a team of experts on planning the conversion, renovation, and restoration of the building complex, as well as on developing an operational concept. In 2018–19, the Stiftung Stadtkultur initiated several workshop discussions with experts from the fields of architecture, culture, and politics to explore future usage scenarios. The central question was: What will be possible at this cultural venue in the future? The discussions concluded that the space should be used in a modular way as a venue for various art forms such as theater, dance, film, concerts, readings, and installations, as well as for symposia, conferences, workshops, and exhibitions. To this end, the stage tower, auditorium, and foyers are to be made versatile in their use. The goal is to make the KAHO usable as a whole as well as in individual room modules.

In 2020, cpm architekten conducted an initial assessment, which formed the basis for the building permit application submitted by the Stiftung Stadtkultur. In early 2021, the Lichtenberg District Building Authority approved the building permit application. Shortly thereafter, the architectural firm dhl architekten was awarded the contract by the Stiftung Stadtkultur to carry out the construction project. dhl architekten specializes in renovation and historic preservation and is supported by several specialist planners.

An interim program in 2021 and 2022 featuring approximately 100 events highlighted the building’s opportunities and challenges. Planning for the conversion of the KAHO from a former large-scale stage into a multifunctional event venue has been underway since 2022.

Since early 2026, the KAHO has been a construction site. Since the renovation primarily affects the interior of the building complex, we will strive to provide insights into the process. Further information on this can be found here.
In parallel with the renovation process, an operational concept is being developed and an operator is being sought to establish the KAHO. Raum für Kultur as an event venue with a special flair for all of Berlin.
