Open Air Cinema: Berlin Feminist Film Week 2021

The Berlin Feminist Film Week program pays tribute to German feminist filmmakers telling female-driven stories set at the horse racetrack: one in the 1980s GDR – one in contemporary Germany, one documentary – one fiction. Both films were shot at the trotting course Karlshorst.

Schnelles Glück, Dir: Petra Tschörtner (GDR 1988, 10 min.)

The 1988 short documentary “Schnelles Glück” tells the story of pensioner Helga Rogau, who has been working at the only GDR horse racetrack in Berlin-Karlshorst for 15 years, yet never dared to gamble herself. Director Petra Tschörtner (1958-2012) was one of a few documentary filmmakers in Eastern Germany before the Fall of the Berlin Wall. We are happy to be able to honour her unique work by showing one of her lesser known short films.

Wanja, Dir: Carolina Hellsgård (Germany 2015, 87 min.)

“Wanja” follows the eponymous main character shortly after finishing a long prison sentence for armed robbery. To avoid falling back into her old ways, Wanja takes up work caring for animals. During an internship at a trotting track she forms a friendship with the rebellious Emma, who reminds her of her younger self. Carolina Hellsgård is a Swedish Berlin based filmmaker, Wanja is her feature film debut.

Audio is provided via wireless headphones, which will be handed out to you upon entry.
