The politics of remembrance in the east and west appear to be entirely different. In historical discourses, the GDR is only associated with having been an illegitimate state, with repressions, SED dictatorship and the Wall. But many people lived in conformity with the system only on the outside, and the GDR was far more than just an SED state. One would never come up with the idea of reducing the history of West Germany to political measures, the police, the government and the courts. So why is such an entirely different approach taken to the history of the GDR? Shouldn‘t history be perceived as a whole?

It’s time to retell the GDR – without idealizing it, but also without demonizing it – and that is what the author Karsten Krampitz does in conversation with the author and moderator Mario Pschera.
